Watamu is home to some well known and established conservation organisations. Local Ocean Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Kenya’s marine environment with a special emphasis on turtles. Watamu Turtle Watch established in 1997 by Watamu residents to protect nesting sea turtles. The programme now consists of nest monitoring and protection, by-catch release, and a special rehabilitation centre for sick and injured sea turtles. The rehab centre welcomes visitors and has guided tours. Bio-Ken Snake Farm.  Located at North Watamu Bio Ken houses the largest collection of snakes in East Africa, with some of the best snake handlers in the country. It is the main anti-venom collection centre in Kenya, with milking of snakes taking place on a daily basis. A fascinating half day activity.
